First-Time Visitor Guide

What You Need to Know Before Your First Visit

Egypt's museum and heritage landscape can be wonderfully complex. Here are the essentials to help you prepare.

1
Buy tickets from official sources only
Each museum operates its own ticketing. Use official websites or on-site offices — never intermediaries who claim guaranteed access.
2
Foreign and national prices differ significantly
Most Egyptian heritage sites have separate pricing for foreign visitors and Egyptian nationals. Always check the relevant rate for your situation.
3
Some sites require additional tickets per zone
In the Valley of the Kings, for example, each royal tomb has its own separate entry. Plan your budget accordingly and prioritise in advance.
4
Mornings on weekdays offer the best experience
Most sites are significantly less crowded before 10am and on weekday mornings. Weekend and holiday afternoons can be very busy at major sites.
5
Carry Egyptian Pounds for on-site purchases
While some major sites accept cards, many on-site services — lockers, guides, food — operate in cash. Carry sufficient local currency.
6
Photography policies vary — check on arrival
Photography rules differ by site and exhibit. Flash photography is generally prohibited. Some mummy halls and special exhibitions restrict all photography.
7
Heat management is essential at outdoor sites
Karnak, Valley of the Kings, and the Pyramids involve significant walking in direct sun. Visit early, bring water, wear sun protection, and plan rest periods.
8
Research what's currently on display
Exhibition content at major museums changes periodically. Check official museum social media or news close to your travel date for current displays.
